Proposal

In our thriller Rachel and I plan to film a fast paced exciting action thriller, it will also have elements of  a psychological thriller. The plot of the thriller has a exciting twists as it plays on a peoples mind at the same time there will be a chase which makes it look like something else is the antagonist. The antagonist will remain unknown and it will end with a gripping cliff hanger as we will be left to find out if the protagonists will escape or not.

lighting exercise

ZODIAC

The  film contains a car drive,  you are able to see guns and blood this starts the enigma you start to ask questions why? What for? How? The film uses the element of shock and this builds tension. The camera uses different shots to add to the tension, close ups show emotion on the characters faces, a close up of an object makes you think intensively about the object and its relevance. Tracking shots allow you to follow the character and keeps you more interested and involved. The music and sound are non diegetic the use of contrapuntal music makes you think that it is more messed up than you first thought. The mise en scene of the film seems dark and gloomy the car is isolated and away from civilisation this adds to the suspense, the event it a contrast to the celebration of the day, the 4th of July is a day of celebration and happiness for most Americans but the event that occurs is devastating and dramatic.

Brick

Brick has typical conventions of a thriller it has a dead body, it has an enigma which is the characters dilemma. The film uses flashbacks effectively to create a mood, it uses slow cuts and reverse shots to make it more interactive. The film contains no dialogue and has lots of non diegetic sounds. It uses a sound bridge of a bell getting faster and changing to a ringing of a school bell , the sound bridge is used to distract you from the dissolve from one shot to another. The camera work is that there are many close up shots of different things from an object to a part of the anatomy. The mise en scene misleads you into thinking it is calm because of the use of the colours blue, however you can see that it is not calm because you have seen a dead body in a sewer.

momento

Momento

The opening to this film is shot in reverse it shows the outcome then works backwards to the point of where it began. The film does not go in the typical order of a film, beginning, middle, end, it is non linear, it involves flashbacks. You can tell it is a thriller because it does have some of the common typical conventions you see in a thriller film, you can see a gun, blood, bullets and broken windows, these devices all start to make you question why they are there? Who are the people? Why is someone dead? The camera uses jump shots and close ups to draw your attention directly to what is focused on. There is a slow tilt from the camera to the face building tension as to the identity of the person holding the camera, there are also high and low angle shots, from looking down on the dead body which is defenceless and looking up to the man with the gun who has all the power. The film is in reverse which gives a complicated narration, the editing uses dissolves to blend together 2 shots and makes the transition quite smooth, the editing also uses shot reverse shot to add to the tension. The main character is dressed in a cream suit so he seems like a calm person his visual appearance does not give the audience any reason to think that he is violent or dangerous, because the audience would infer this by the colour red but he does not wear red. In the Mise en Scene there are many devices used to create suspense, there is a photo of a body covered in blood that is fading, the building the characters enter is a rusty run down looking place it seems desolate and shack like, the interior of the building has cracked walls and broken photo frames it doesn't seem like a good place to be. Parts of the flashbacks are shot in black and white trying to imply that it is not a very clear story.

focus group evaluation

For another way of conveying our market research we had to film a focus group that watched us discus the three of our ideas and then asked people what they thought of them. We asked questions what were relevant to our research.
The questions asked were;

  1. What makes a good thriller?
  2. What idea do you like best and why?
  3. Whats your favourite part of a thriller?
  4. Would you prefer to see the antagonist or protagonist in the first shot?
  5. Would you prefer to have a happy ending in the opening scene or a continued action?

During our discussion we quickly discovered that our initial idea was not sufficient enough to be able to produce so we had to pick another of the three ideas. We concluded that will us our mixed idea of action/thriller in a forest.

source code

Source code is about a a man who is unknowingly in a coma, he is plugged into machines that are keeping him alive, unaware that he is just a brain he is put on a mission to go back in time to a certain point to intercept a bomb, but before he is able to do this he must identify the bomber in order to save millions of lives. The source code allows him to go back and his identity is the one of someone who didn't make it, his mind is still his own which is why on his first voyage back to the moment of time where he was required he is left confused and unaware of his mission. He is briefly told what has happened and what needs to be done and he is sent back, 8 minutes is all he has each time to find the bomb or bomber, his first few attempts are futile he is getting nowhere and getting annoyed and impatient by his lack of achievement. As he starts to get closer to the identity of the bomber he becomes more determined to save everyone especially one person the woman who appears to know him, she knows who she can see she is unaware that it is a different person inside this body presented before her.
