Certification

Certification means that a film will be suitable for a certain age that is approved by the BritishBoard of Film.

U means universal, it also means that the films are suitable for anyone over the age of 4. Some examples of films that are suitable for all ages are; Toy Story, Bee movie and many more.

PG stands for Parental Guidance, it means that a parent should watch the film first and decide whether or not their child should watch the film. PG films are generally suitable for most viewers but some scenes may be unsuitable for younger children.

The main difference between the two is that 12 films are videos, blu-ray and DVD's where as 12A films are for the cinema, people younger that 12 must be accompanied by an adult when watching the film.

No one younger than 15 may see a '15' film in a cinema. No one younger than 15 may rent or buy a '15' rated video.

18 means that no-one under the age of 18 can watch the film in cinema, buy or rent a 18 film and that any 18 film is definitely not suitable for children.

Ideas for a thriller.

Our first idea is to shoot in Hainalt forest- a deserted area, a group of friends with something or someone following them. They get separated. They must each try and find an escape from the forest along with each other.

Our next idea is Lost In London- someone is escorted to London knocked out or blindfolded, they wake up alone on a bench, they try desperately to get home asking for money and directions. TWIST it is a dream they wake up but there is no family around, keep looking everywhere there is no one anywhere, there are despaired and distraught TWIST its another dream, a dream within a dream. They wake up screaming and their family run in, its over...

Our last idea was Isolated. A person i a light, small room, there is no dialogue. There are doors that lead to light or dark rooms, once door is opened other one disappears, stuck to their choice. They must pick the right door to their freedom and back to real world. Riddles to influence the door choice they must with the choices they made somehow make it back to reality.

Plot

The plot of the film is something that makes the film go along, it is the basis on what everything revolves around. Cause and Effect are terms that allow the action and theme reveal itself throughout the film, the Cause is something that starts the action, because of this the Effect must take place the effect is the actions taken to solve the problem  that the Cause has created.
A plot refers to;

  • A series of events.
  • A foundation that starts the action or reveals itself as the problem.
  • A situation that causes drama.
  • Peaks and dips of action that involves a person over coming difficulties.
  • A climax where the most important part of the film is shown, it is normally the height of tension or suspense.
  • The aftermath of the climax where the action normally dies down a little bit till the next peak of action or difficulty.
  • The ending is where all the action has been resolved and the story is coming to an end.

Basic lighting

  • Key Lighting is the brightest and most effective.
  • The Back Light helps to cancel out the effect of the key light and creates a silhouette.
  • Under Lighting is is when the main source of light is coming from underneath the character.
  • Back lighting is when the light source comes from behind the character.
  • Low key lighting is when only the back light and key light is used.
  • High key lighting is when the image appears bright and well lit up
  • Filler Light is the type of light that helps to soften the shadows  that both key and back light have created.
  • Top Lighting is when the main source of light is shining from above the character making facial features more obvious.

Enigmas

An enigma is a person or thing that is mysterious, puzzling, or

difficult to understand. Cinema trailers and posters are a good

example of the use if enigma codes to try and tempt their target

audience to watch the film. Enigmas in films is when a question

that is not immediately answered is asked and the answer draws

the audience into the story.

Collateral

This guy is clearly something special, I personally don't see it, his face take up the space on the film poster, this was a technique used to make people want to see the film, just because he is obviously in it. His name was so big when this film came out they put his name in the same size as the title, his co-stars name and even the directors name are barely visible just shows a bit of desperation in my opinion.

Now personally I despise Tom Cruise I don't know what it is about him but in none of his films I just can't connect with any of his characters, he just seems to do the same thing over and over again.

Anyway Collateral a film that stars Tom Cruise along with Jamie Foxx. the film came out in 2004 it was one of the first and major films to be filmed with digital cameras. Directed by Michael Mann he didn't do a bad job in making a thriller, throughout the film the audience has to ask themselves questions, why was this done? What was the purpose of that? All questions a thriller should draw out of the audience. Michael Mann chose to use the Viper Film Stream High-Definition Camera to film many of the scenes of Collateral. The use of a digital camera is clear in some scenes, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRTSpjUfcKE this scene shows the use of digital camera's if a camera that uses reels was used then they would not have been able to capture it on film as it would have taken too long to get lighting set up to see it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LyAp5jL6ok This is the trailer.

Max is a cab driver he picks up Vincent who flashes cash and says he will give Max and attractive sum of money to drive him around to 5 stops, not knowing that Vincent is a hit-man who is killing a person at each stop, once he realises he tries with all his might to get out of his deal with Vincent much to his failure, in order to save the last person he rushes to her rescue and is able to get away from Vincent briefly until they are left face to face with only a door between them, each armed with a hand gun, who will come out on top, a man who never held a gun until that night or a professional who's job it is to kill people?

The film did ultimately bring success from the box office grossed $24.7 million its opening weekend, ranking number 1 at the box office.

This scene http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZQWu0gDpO4 is when Max (Foxx) gets pulled over, he is forced to think fast, he is under pressure from Vincent (Cruise) to get rid of them or else he will be forced to kill them. The scene shows that Max is struggling under the pressure he is fumbling around he is trying hard to concentrate, when the officer notices the blood on the front window, you can see the panic set in on Max's face and eyes in particular, we also see Vincent preparing to take over and get the job done his way, but fortunately for the cops they are called away. The officers use their torches, the light comes from them, it can represent that they are the good guys, its ironic they are the only people that would be able to help Max but due to the circumstance he is in he knows that he is endangering their lives and his, the light at the end of the tunnel is fading and Max is left on his own once more with Vincent. The majority of the film is in poorly lit area's giving a dark and cold feel to the film which also adds to atmosphere.

rachel and kelsey prelim

This is our preliminary task we had to do a series of recordings of; match on action, shot reverse shot, and the 180 degree rule. We purposely broke the 180 degree rule to show that if you cross the line the characters look like they have switched positions. Match on action is when one shot is taken from one scene, and continues into the next. Shot reverse shot is when the camera moves from one character to the other.

Dialogue

Dialogue is a form of communication consisting of a written or spoken conversational exchange between two or more people.
The conversation can be one sided one character might do all the talking.
Monologues are also a form of dialogue but this involves one person talking.

Parallel sounds- Halloween theme

When the sound we hear should usually go hand in hand with the image on screen. This is known on Parallel sound. For example if we were to watch a horror film and we are about to witness a murder, you would accompany some dark, fast tempo music with the action.

SHINING - Contrapuntal Sound

Contrapuntal sounds are sounds that conflict or contrast with the action shown it is also known as a juxtaposition.

Without the music the clip seems tranquil and relaxed but with the music the clip has a creepy and negative feel to it.

Directing and Directors

There is a certain skill of direction well. Directing is good storytelling, the ability to plot a story in the most fascinating way for the audience to see. Plotting a filmed story means deciding which events, actors and settings will be seen in the shots, what elements will be shown to gain maximum dramatic effect to engross the viewers, the directors job is to ensure that all the filming elements (mise-en-scene, sound) are drawn together to best suit the story being told.
Different directors film in different ways,
Quentin Tarantino  is known for his use of the camera he uses fast panning for his action films. He has been nick named a "director DJ", comparing his elaborate use of mix-and-match genre and music infusion to the use of sampling a DJ exhibits, morphing a variety of old works to create a new one.
Pulp Fiction, since its release in 1994, has remained one of the most iconic films in history. Tarantino maintained the depiction of violence, for which he is known, as well as his non-linear story lines.

Faster

Starring Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson and Billy Bob Thornton.
An ex-con seeks revenge for his brother's murder following a bank heist that went wrong. In the first 5 minutes of the film we see Driver (Johnson) talking to a judge but we hear what he hears and he blocks out the words and focus' on the sound of the clock the ticking and counting down to his freedom, the ticking fades and the next shot is him being released, he goes for a run which is followed by a tracking shot, it is a good shot from the side and back of him. So Driver has been out of prison for a matter of minutes and what is one of the first things he does? He gets his car drives to a business walks in past reception finds who he is looking for and shots him without a word, something tells me he likes prison food. So 10 years of prison and now he's looking for a couple of life sentences one thing I can say is that Driver does not do things by halves.
Whilst being hunted by the cops Driver also has to avoid being killed by an assassin who is meant to be one of the best but is somehow out run by Driver on more than one occasion, what assassin lets his target get away even once?
After failing his mission the assassin decides to hang up his gun and leave it for another person, yet his failure starts to eat at him and tear him apart, he breaks his promise to his wife to be and sets out to finish what he started.
Driver is on a serious mission to avenge his brother, he marches into a hospital where his target is already fighting for his life he just walks in to the operating room and shots him whilst he is being operated on then leaves. Cop (Thornton) follows him but is outwitted by Driver and as a Cop goes to turn the corner Driver is right in his face tension builds in this face to face moment with darkness around both characters suspense build as Driver decides whether to shot Cop, the electric flickers throughout the confrontation and both characters are one second lit the next in the shadows, this can reflect there characters as Driver wants to do good by his brother which is him in the light but him in the shadows is him currently doing bad by breaking the law. Cop can be seen as good and bad because he tries to do his job and be there for his son who craves his attention but he is a "dope" addict he uses drugs and uses any money he has to beg for some.

Legal Thrillers

The legal thriller is a sub-genre of thriller and crime fiction in which the major characters are lawyers and their employees. The system of justice itself is always a major part of these works, at times almost functioning as one of the characters.

A famous legal thriller author is John Grisham. John Ray Grisham, Jr. (born February 8, 1955) is an American lawyer and author, best known for his popular legal thrillers
The Pelican Brief is a 1993 legal crime thriller based on the novel of the same name by John Grisham. Directed by Alan J. Pakula, the film stars Julia Roberts in the role of young law student Darby Shaw and Denzel Washington as Washington Herald reporter Gray Grantham.
A law student uncovers a conspiracy, putting herself and others in danger.

Conspiracy thrillers

Political thrillers

A political thriller is usually about the politics and trying to win votes to run the country between good and evil. Usually a political thriller gives us mystery, an interesting plot, sometimes political thrillers have assassinations.
The Manchurian candidate is a prime example of a political thriller.
In the midst of the Gulf War, soldiers are kidnapped and brainwashed for sinister purposes.
It opens with a group of soldiers cheering in a bar in Korea as their commander, Sgt. Raymond Shaw appears to inform them that they are to be back on duty. Whilst on patrol, Shaw and his company are assaulted by Korean troops.
After being kidnapped by the Korean troops, and then released, commander, Sgt. Shaw is welcomed back to USA as a hero, he accepts a medal of honour for his services, with all of his troops that he served with being supportive all but one, Ben Marco (Denzel Washington) suspecting that something sinister happened whilst they were in Korea, a brainwashing of some sort.

Cinematography

Cinematography is mainly to do with the camera and lighting departments, the person operating the camera is the cinematographer.

Director of photography is the chief over the camera and lighting crews working on a film, and responsible for achieving artistic and technical decisions related to the image.

Camera operator is responsible for physically operating the camera and maintaining composition and camera angles throughout a given scene or shot.

Focus puller is a member of a film crew’s camera department whose primary responsibility is to maintain image sharpness on whatever subject or action is being filmed.

Clapper loader typically has a very high responsibility level on any given set, because they are more or less the only person on set who directly and physically oversees the state of the undeveloped negative.

Lighting department (gaffer and sparks) the gaffer is the head of the Electrical Department, responsible for the design and execution of the electrical distribution and lighting plan for a production. Sometimes the Gaffer is credited as Chief Lighting Technician.

Grip department (riggers) grips are trained Lighting and Rigging Technicians. Their main responsibility is to work closely with the Electrical Department to put in the non-electrical components of lighting set-ups required for a shot, such as flags, overheads, and bounces. The Key Grip is the chief Grip on a set, and is the head of the Set Operations Department. The Key Grip works with the Director of Photography to help set up the set and to achieve correct lighting and blocking.

Thriller Conventions

The aim for thrillers is to keep the audience alert and on the edge of their seats. Central to the plot of a thriller is that one character will feel injustice has been carried against them, some thrillers will have a blurred line of good and bad, they will have red-herrings and cliff hangers and plot twists. A thriller provides the sudden rush of emotions, excitement, sense of suspense sometimes at a constant. Common methods and themes in crime thrillers are mainly ransomscaptivitiesheistsrevengekidnappings. . More common in mystery thrillers are investigations and the who done it technique. Common elements in psychological thrillers are mind gamespsychological themesstalking, confinement/death-trapshorror, and obsessionThreats to whole countries, spies, espionage, conspiracies, assassins and electronic surveillance are common in spy thrillers.
Plots of thrillers involve characters which come into conflict with each other or with outside forces – the threat is sometimes unseen. An atmosphere of creepy menace and sudden violence, such as crime and murder, characterize thrillers. Thrillers often present the world and society as dark, corrupt and dangerous. But in Hollywood they usually feature upbeat endings in which evil is overcome. The tension usually arises when the character is placed in a menacing situation, a mystery, or a trap from which escaping seems impossible.

"Kill Bill Vol. 2"

The opening to Kill Bill 2, repeats what happens in Kill Bill 1, it shows us the pasts and present through Uma Thermans character's eyes. Although bad graphics when she is in the car it is still powerful as her monologue, she maintains eye contact through the camera to make it more personal and direct. The word "massacrer" shows the audience the violence and coldness of the character. The scene again like the first one is in black and white a device used to add tension.

Film clip analysis- Kill Bill vol. 1

Before any sound you can hear footsteps approaching, heavy breathing and cries.
"do you find me statistic" are the first words heard, they imply that the speaker is powerful and smart.
The scene is in black and white, this adds tension and suspense it is more affective than if it were in colour.
The camera angle is as if from the person standing over her's point of view, crouching over her body watching her suffer, wiping her brow in a comforting way then putting a bullet in her head, yes I'd say he was "statistic." The fact that we never see the guys face adds the element of suspense, the mood set by his actions are menace and murder.

James Bond

The ultimate spy thriller, British secret agent, who doesn't seem that secret as whenever he confronts the villain they seem to know who he is, anyhow one of the best spy thrillers ever made based on novels written by Ian Fleming. So far there are 23 films and I am sure there are many more to come because it is a franchise   that should never die, its brilliant. Based on Ian Flemings 14 novels, and short stories the film industry has produced 23 films and counting.

Recipe for a Bond Film

•A dashing, sexy, and heroic secret agent.
•An eccentric villain of equal / greater strength
•A number of gorgeous women Bond will make love to.
• Exotic locations and plot devices
•Exciting stunt-driven action (often a little absurd).
The John Barry music.
A ‘pop song’ that will promote the film.
An opening action sequence.
Bond being given his ‘mission’ – ‘M’ + gadgets
Fights and car chases.
Bond trapped.
Final scene (often on an island) where Bond overcomes the odds and triumphs.

The film adaptations have included 6 actors to play the lead man. Each lead man has brought something unique to the table, comedy, action, cars, women, swarveness, sophisication.

Sean Connery

George Lazenby

Roger Moore

Timothy Dalton

Pierce Brosnan

Daniel Craig.

The first James Bond film was Dr No, in 1962. In the film, James Bond is sent to Jamaica to investigate the death of a fellow British agent. The trail leads him to the underground base of Dr. Julius No, who is plotting to disrupt an early American manned space launch with a radio beam weapon.Dr. No was produced with a low budget, and was a financial success.

Budget$1 million
Box office$59.6 million
Sean Connery did five films before being taken over by George Lazenby a less successful Bond he was only required to do 1 film On Her Majesty's Secret Service 1969  it seemed he was not suitable for the role to do more that one film.
On Her Majesty's Secret Service Movie Poster
Budget$7 million
Box office$82 million
After Lazenby's disappointing attempt at playing James Bond, Sean Connery was asked to return, and so he did for an extra film, Diamonds are Forever 1971.
Budget$7.2 million
Box office$116 million

Roger Moore was next to put his stamp on James Bond and it seems he did it very well being the person to play Bond longest with him returning for 7 films, his first taste into Bond life was Live and Let Die in 1973,  In the film, a Harlem drug lord known as Mr. Big plans to distribute two tons of heroin free to put rival drug barons out of business. Mr. Big, however, is revealed to be the disguised alter ego of Dr. Kananga, a corrupt Caribbean dictator, who rules San Monique, the fictional island where the heroin poppies are secretly farmed. Bond is investigating the death of three British agents, leading him to Kananga, where he is soon trapped in a world of gangsters and voodoo as he fights to put a stop to the drug baron's scheme.
Budget$7 million
Box office$161.8 million
And who should follow in Roger Moore's defined footprints, Timothy Dalton he was a good Bond but didn't seem to leave a lasting impression as Bond as he only did 2 films, The Living Daylights in 1987.
Budget$40 million
Box office$191.2 million
And Licence to Kill in 1989.
Budget$32 million
Box office$156.2 million
Daltons box office went down and was deemed not a very successful Bond.
So Timothy Dalton's stint as James Bond had run its course and who was to be the next bond... Pierce Brosnan, (my personal favourite) he started his fairly successful stint as James Bond in 1995 with GoldenEye, many say that Brosnan was not a good Bond but I and critiques disagree "Some critics viewed the film as a modernisation of the series, and felt Brosnan was a definite improvement over his predecessor." GoldenEye was actually quite successful.
Budget$58 million
Box office$356.4 million
Brosnan lasted 4 films his final film Die Another Day in 2002.
Budget$142 million
Box office$431.9 million
Brosnan's box office increased from his first to last film as Bond, but he was seen as ageing for a Bond, the action as Bond in his films went down, so Bond needed a new face.
So Brosnan was gone and it was time for Bond to regenerate and have a new face, it was Daniel Craig's time to shine, his first film Casino Royale turned out to be quite a hit.
Budget$150 million
Box office$599,045,960
Daniel Craig is the current Bond he lasted 3 films so far and is rumoured to be doing another one. His latest film SkyFall has been the most successful film of the franchise, I've already seen it twice it is amazing it has to be the best Bond film yet by far.
Budget$150−200 million
Box office$796,574,734
Skyfall has become one of the most successful films this year, its box office is record breaking

Cliffhangers

cliffhanger or cliffhanger ending is a plot device in fiction which features a main character in a difficult dilemma, or confronted with a shocking revelation at the end of an episode. A cliffhanger is hoped to ensure the audience will return to see how the characters resolve the dilemma.

The clip above is a cliffhanger from the film Kill Bill, the transition to grey colours, suggests more is to come, it infers a element of danger, as in the scene it seems set in a hospital with the IV drip attached to the chair, but after the revelation of the daughter she thought was dead being alive, then cutting to a black screen gives the audience things to ponder in their minds, will she find her daughter? Does the daughter know about her mother?

Psychological thrillers

  • Psychological – Elements that are related to the mind or processes of the mind; they are mental rather than physical in nature. Sometimes the suspense comes from within one solitary character where characters must resolve conflicts with their own minds. Usually, this conflict is an effort to understand something that has happened to them. These conflicts are made more vivid with physical expressions of the conflict in the means of either physical manifestations, or physical torsions of the characters at play.
  • Thriller – Generally, thrillers focus on plot over character, and thus emphasize intense, physical action over the character's psyche. Psychological thrillers tend to reverse this formula to a certain degree, emphasizing the characters just as much as, if not more so than, the plot.
  • Psychological thriller – Characters are no longer reliant on physical strength to overcome their brutish enemies (which is often the case in typical action-thrillers), but rather are reliant on their mental resources, whether it be by battling wits with a formidable opponent or by battling for equilibrium in the character's own mind. The suspense created by psychological thrillers often comes from two or more characters preying upon one another's minds, either by playing deceptive games with the other or by merely trying to demolish the other's mental state

A good psychological thriller is Shutter Island, the storyline is U.S. marshal Teddy Daniels is assigned to investigate the disappearance of a patient from Boston's Shutter Island Ashecliffe Hospital. He's been pushing for an assignment on the island for personal reasons, but before long he wonders whether he hasn't been brought there as part of a twisted plot by hospital doctors whose radical treatments range from unethical to illegal to downright sinister. Teddy's shrewd investigating skills soon provide a promising lead, but the hospital refuses him access to records he suspects would break the case wide open. As a hurricane cuts off communication with the mainland, more dangerous criminals "escape" in the confusion, and the puzzling, improbable clues multiply, Teddy begins to doubt everything - his memory, his partner, even his own sanity.

This film toys with your mind to the extent of confusion, the twist in the film makes you wonder why everything else happened and how did he make his make believe world seems so real.

Red Herrings

A red herring refers to a device or diversion used to distract the onlooker from the original idea. Red herrings are often seen in films, adventure games, and puzzles.

In films, a red herring can often be found in Alfred Hitchcock stories, where characters and things turn out to be anything but what the viewer expects them to be. One of the best examples of the use of a red herring in modern film can be found in the film Saw. During the whole film, two characters spend time imprisoned in a room in which a third character lies dead. Throughout the film, both characters appear to be guilty of a series of murders, until is discovered at the end that the third person in the room is not actually dead. He is, in fact, the killer.

In the Bodyguard the red herring is the creepy stalker guy, who everyone assumes is the killer. However the real killer is a hit man hired my the targets sister!

This is the stalker who is believed to be the killer.

This is the actual hit man who is not even suspected until the final moment.

Chuck Jones- Road Runner

Chuck Jones was an animatorcartoon artistscreenwriterproducer, and director of animated films, most memorably of Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies shorts for the Warner Bros. Cartoons studio. He directed many of the classic short animated cartoons starring Bugs BunnyDaffy Duck, the Road Runner and Wile E. CoyoteSylvesterPepĂ© Le Pew and a slew of other Warner characters.

Wile E Coyote.gifRoadrunner.gif

Roadrunner
Chuck Jones created a set of "rules" in which the roadrunner series must comply.
The "rules" were;

1. The Road Runner cannot harm the Coyote except by going "meep, meep."
2. No outside force can harm the Coyote -- only his own ineptitude or the failure of Acme products. Trains and trucks were the exception from time to time.
3. The Coyote could stop anytime -- if he were not a fanatic.
4. No dialogue ever, except "meep, meep" and yowling in pain.
5. The Road Runner must stay on the road -- for no other reason than that he's a roadrunner.
6. All action must be confined to the natural environment of the two characters -- the southwest American desert.
7. All tools, weapons, or mechanical conveniences must be obtained from the Acme Corporation.
8. Whenever possible, make gravity the Coyote's greatest enemy.
9. The Coyote is always more humiliated than harmed by his failures.
10. The audience's sympathy must remain with the Coyote.
11. The Coyote is not allowed to catch or eat the Road Runner.

Suspense

Suspense is a feeling of uncertainty and anxiety about the outcome of certain actions, most often referring to an audience's perceptions in a dramatic work. Suspense is not exclusive to fiction, though. Suspense may operate in any situation where there is a lead-up to a big event or dramatic moment, with tension being a primary emotion felt as part of the situation. In the kind of suspense described by film director Alfred Hitchcock, an audience experiences suspense when they expect something bad to happen and have (or believe they have) a superior perspective on events in the drama's hierarchy of knowledge, yet they are powerless to intervene to prevent it from happening. Films having a lot of suspense belong in the thriller genre.

The Trailer above is from a film full of suspense.

When her sister disappears, Jill is convinced the serial killer who kidnapped her two years ago has returned, and she sets out to once again face her abductor. The suspense build by the minute as Jill is frantically trying to work out what happened to her sister, she fears desperately for her own life this builds tension, fear and adds to the element of suspense.

Maguffins

In fiction, a MacGuffin (sometimes McGuffin or maguffin) is a plot device in the form of some goal, desired object
The specific nature of a MacGuffin may be ambiguous, undefined, generic, left open to interpretation, or otherwise completely unimportant to the overall plot. The most common type of MacGuffin is an object, place or person the exact details of which are not integral to the narrative. However, a MacGuffin can sometimes take a more abstract form, such as money, victory, glory, survival, power, love, or even something that is entirely unexplained, as long as it strongly motivates key characters within the structure of the plot. Whether the audience should care about or identify with a MacGuffin in a story is open to debate among producers of fiction.
The MacGuffin technique is common in films, especially thrillers. Usually the MacGuffin is the central focus of the film in the first act, and then declines in importance as the struggles and motivations of characters play out. It may come back into play at the climax of the story, but sometimes the MacGuffin is actually forgotten by the end of the story.

In North by North West the maguffin is the drugs being smuggled via a statue.

The most famous MacGuffin of all time, the question driving Orson Welles' 1941 masterpiece Citizen Kane was what newspaper tycoon Charles Foster Kane meant by his deathbed utterance, "Rosebud." Although it's now widely known, the revelation that this MacGuffin was a symbol of Kane's lost childhood still packs a punch
.
In Reservoir Dogs the diamonds are the Maguffin. At the centre of that unseen robbery and all its horrible, horrible consequences is a bag of diamonds. Rarely seen and barely mentioned, the diamonds are the impetus for all the swearing, fighting, shooting, killing, torturing, and backstabbing. Things get so horrific that audiences can be forgiven if they forgot that the bag of diamonds are what brought the colour coded madmen together in the first place. And in the end, every one of them (except for Mr. Pink) ends up dead for the MacGuffin.

We watched a film called Unknown, a man who has created an identity to hide his assassin life, he is involved in an accident and when he wakes from a coma he believes his made up identity is who he is, the life he thinks he has is torn apart, no-one recognises him and no-one believes his story, he then has to start retracing his steps in order to find out who he is. Liam Neeson plays the main character Martin Harris a scientist who is in Berlin to attend a conference  he is separated from his briefcase at the airport so goes back for it then he is involved in the accident.

This is a poster that was released with the film, the main character is surrounded by darkness and a blurred landscape this can represent his state of mind as his memory is blurred by the accident. The slogan "take back your life" is a clear message that is shown throughout the film, Martin Harris has lost all control of his life, he is lost and confused by the fact he is not known to his wife and colleagues that he believes he has been with and worked with for years.

Types of thrillers

A thriller consists of different genres that overlap to make a thriller, there are different types of thrillers, spy thrillers like James Bond, crime thrillers like The Thomas Crown Affair, political thrillers like Nick Of Time, conspiracy thrillers like The Conspiracy Theory, medical thrillers like Contagion, psychological thrillers like Se7en, horror thrillers like Silence Of The Lambs and action thrillers like Die Hard.

James Bond is a spy thriller or spy fiction, because the hero (James Bond) works for a government agency who must take violent action against, rival government agents or terrorists.

With the use of gadgets, fast cars, and the constant action to protect Queen and Country James Bond is the ultimate spy thriller. The clip below shows a montage of Bond, the action, cars and gadgets, the music and theme tune is catchy but has an element suspense building.

The Thomas Crown Affair is a crime thriller because it is full of tense scenes based on the theft of a famous painting that leads to an insurance agent following the trail of Thomas Crown.

This clip is the return of the stolen painting, it is so cleverly filmed, it plays with your mind and makes you wonder where the painting is, who has it and how are they doing it? It would of required lots of planning and time to perfect each change of brief case to ensure the right one got where it needed to go. The music is quick and speeds up the pace of the film and the film is ironic as Thomas Crown will have to go on the run after this as the police know it is him.

Nick of Time is a political thriller as the main character is made to kill the governor in order to save his daughters life. The governor is wearing red this draws our attention to her, the music speeds up and this reflects time running out for the father to make his ultimate descision to save his daughter.

A conspiracy thriller involves a person going against a large group of powerful people that are often hiding a big story, only the main character can see the extent of the cover up, The Conspiracy Theory is a prime example of a conspiracy thriller. So Jerry has been collecting evidence for years about a secret service he thinks is hiding something they have found out that he is trying to get people to believe him and now they are after him will someone believe him or will he suffer for talking?

Contagion is a medical thriller that shows a disease spreading and those who currently immune to it are fighting to find a cure and save loved ones. "Contagion" follows the rapid progress of a lethal airborne virus that kills within days. As the fast-moving epidemic grows, the worldwide medical community races to find a cure and control the panic that spreads faster than the virus itself. At the same time, ordinary people struggle to survive in a society coming apart.

Se7en a great psychological thriller involving a rookie and veteran detectives on the trail of a serial killer who uses the 7 deadly sins to kill his victims. There is a tick tock sound up until a body is found this can show that it was only a matter of time until the body was found like it was planned for them to find it. At the end of the trailer the ticking becomes a lot faster this shows that they are getting closer to the criminal.
